ABOUT US

In April 1981, a young graduate of Cornell University wanted to create a small press of his own to focus on the publishing of books which major publishing houses were either ignoring or avoiding at that time. Roger M. Davis (aka Adisa Maina Omar) went on to establish the first office of AKU Press International located in Washington DC when he also opened the Papyrus Record Emporium in the Mt. Pleasant street neighborhood. The store and office stood just above the famous Heller's Bakery. Papyrus Record Emporium was launched as DC's first eclectic Africentric record and book store. It proceeded by several months the opening of Pyramid Bookstore (founded by Bro.Hodari Ali). Ironically, although the two stores were competitors the relationship between Hodari Ali and Adisa Omar was cordial. In fact, Hodari's own Liberation Information Distributing Company (LIDCO) became the sole distributor of AKU Press International's first title release in 1981 entitled '60 to '80:Songs for the Black Struggle.

In the late 1980s the focus of AKU Press International gradually shift from its African-centered roots to a more diverse menu of topics and genres ranging from philosophy, to religion, spirituality, alternative healthcare, wellness and ancient history. And,starting in the 1990s the press further evolved into the publishing of books and other media related to the work of the Ikologiks Center for Global Studies (formerly, the International Academy of Ikologiks & Advanced Studies, Inc.). It was during this time that the press adopted our official slogan -- "books to enlighten from withing and without".

In 1999 our first major new release entitled "Ultimate Mental Power" became one of AKU's bestselling books and received rave reviews upon its release. In 2001 the press marked its 20th anniversary by publishing a re-release and expanded edition of its very first title. This re-release entitled: 60 to Tranzinfinity: Drop'n Jewelz for the Nu-Blak Struggle made additions to the original collection of poetry published in the 1981 edition and seized upon the opportunity to link the work to the flourishing genre of hip hop, rap, or the hard-hitting poetic expressions of rappers like Tupac Shakur or KRS 1.

In the first decade of the 21st century we released several new titles and AKU Press International officially moved under the umbrella of the Ikologiks Center for Global Studies as its official publishing house. In addition, the small press developed plans to expand operations into related media areas like animation work, film & video productions, transcriptions, translations, website development and a reentry into the events and concert promotion fields.
This small company is still moving ahead with rather ambitious plans to become a diversified and energetic producer of books, films, events and other content media driven product offerings with an international context, flare and draw.
